WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY TUNDE JEGEDE

‘19th century composer and virtuoso violinist, born in West Africa, taken as a slave to Brazil and becoming one of the leading violinists at the Lisbon Opera House’

Emidy - ‘He Who Dared to Dream’ is a new multi-media theatre piece, composed and performed by the luminary composer and multi-instrumentalist Tunde Jegede, centred around the extraordinary life and times of the C19 composer and virtuoso violinist, Joseph Antonio Emidy. Chronicling his amazing journey across three continents, the piece retells Emidy’s narrative through imagery, movement, music and text. The piece is an artistic testament to his legacy and gives a unique insight into this historical iconic figure who embraced the worlds of classical, African and South American music well over two hundred years ago. Like Emidy, Tunde Jegede has a deep knowledge of both Western Classical music and African music traditions and, with a team of multi-disciplinary artists, he will bring this story alive to new audiences in innovative and contemporary ways. Much of the narrative is told through film and imagery, created by the visual artist Sunara Begum, taking us deep into Emidy’s perception and vision of the world.

Emidy - ‘He Who Dared to Dream’ is a powerful new piece, narrated by the rising young dancer, Ishimwa Muhimanyi, which embraces the worlds of Bach and the baroque to medieval African Classical music. It features the baroque guitarist and multi-percussionist, Raphael Guel and the work of the celebrated visual artists, Taiwo Emmanuel Jegede and Galina Chester. With the exquisite music of the kora (harp-lute), baroque guitar and cello, the music, words, paintings and sculptures will be re-imagined by Sunara Begum’s unique visual eye, transcending genres, idioms and artforms into a timeless intimate portrait of a hidden history and iconic figure lost in time.
